The Digglers ~ Pet Memory Website

Welcome To The Digglers Charitable Trust

Introduction

Hello and a warm welcome to the Digglers website. This site is dedicated to the memory of each of my special pet friends (the Digglers) both past and present. From cats to horses, from sheep to hens they all have their own unique story to tell. Within the Digglers Pet Memory website I wish to share some of the joy and happiness I have had keeping all these wonderful animal friends.

The Digglers ~ Pets

The Digglers ~ Pets area lists the names of all the animals I have kept. I have written their life history and all the fond memories. Wherever possible I have tried to include photos that will give you a flavour of what they are like and some of their antics. For some of the animals I have been able to record them on video these can be seen within the videos and music area. Also within the videos and music area you can download and listen to some of the music I have composed and played for the Digglers.

Life is never dull when the Digglers' are around. Catch up with their latest antics in the Digglers' diary area. Although every animal has a special significance to me, for some of them I have written a specific poem or song, which can be found within the poem song and prayer area. Also within that area is a selection of prayers.

The Digglers Home

The majority of the Digglers have lived or are living on my 5 acre small holding in Diggle. Hence the name "The Digglers". I also explain how I built and expanded the housing to accommodate the various types of animals in situ on the land. This is within the Digglers' home area and describes how I have accommodated horses, cats, sheep and hens as well as encouraging local wildlife. I have included photos of the Digglers home and surrounding area to give you an idea what the place is like.

A Study Of Diggle

As I am obviously very fond of the place where my Digglers live/lived, in 1991 for a BA Environmental Studies degree at Manchester University I did a detailed study of the Diggle area, which includes the geology, agriculture and industry within the valley. This can be found within the study of Diggle area.

The Trustees would like to thank Pete Leeson and the Woodland Trust for confirming the delivery of saplings in the Autumn. See letters.

Subject to confirmation, Pete Leeson from the Woodland Trust (www.woodlandtrust.org.uk) has agreed to supply all trees and shrubs required to establish Thorns Beck Wood. He has also agreed the Trust would also supply 75 metres of guard. Pete said we should get confirmation within five weeks. The shrubs and trees would be delivered in November so volunteers are being asked to sharpen their spades as the Trust does not provide the labour for the planting. This is an excellent offer and we would like to thank the Trust in anticipation. See letters.

Donations / Sponsorship

Donations towards veterinary treatment for the stray cats

For more information about how to donate and to see previous donation please see the Donations section. Also we welcome sponsorship of the animals.

The Digglers' Legacy

The Digglers' legacy section tells you about the different long term plans I have had for Diggle, and how these subsequently altered due to changing situations within my life. It outlines the long term goal for Diggle, which is for it to be a place where the environment and animals are looked after. After my death I wish Diggle to be turned into a charity so that my dream of helping animals and the environment may continue. I describe the person (Pamela Hallas) whose help and friendship has meant that Diggle has been able to be transformed into the memory garden it is today.

Donations, Sponsorship and Volunteering

Many of the cats who have ended up as a Diggler were once strays. Some of these cats could not be re-homed in a normal home environment but the Digglers home is the perfect for them. To help with the care of them any donations would be warmly appreciated. For more information about how you can donate and help towards the veterinary care of these once stray cats please see the Donations area. Some of the cats / sheep are up for sponsorship. For more information please see the sponsorship page. The Digglers also welcome volunteers to help out with the maintence of the Digglers' home and care of the animals. The Volunteers page includes some of the experiences our volunteers have encountered.

Stories

In 1969 I qualified as a primary school teacher working mainly within the infant department. You will find in the stories area several that I wrote with these children in mind. All of these had a moral or social message and focused around the topic of wildlife, which you may find of interest. Many of these children accompanied teachers and friends on visits to the Digglers' home and spent many happy hours on the small holding making friends with a variety of animals. This can be seen in the development of a poultry house on the site, see Sooty. I have therefore included these stories as they have a relevance to my love of animals and wildlife in general.

Final Thoughts

Due to having had the pleasure of so many animals and my continual adopting of new ones, this site will continuously be developed as a record to the memory of them all. I hope you enjoy reading about the "Digglers" as much as I have enjoyed looking after them.
